(From Dales's bio)

I was born September 16, 1954, raised in Nazareth, PA, home of Martin Guitar. In my teens I became inspired by meeting some of the world's finest guitar builders. This led me to play guitar and become a builder. Visiting the shop of one of Martin's craftsmen encouraged me to buy one of his guitars. I was overwhelmed by the craftsmanship and ease of playing. At that point I knew I wanted to build an instrument of that quality. I started building acoustic guitars in 1977 in collaboration with friend Dick Boak.

Contemporary Guitar Making and Hands-On Guitar Making - offering expert lecture/demonstration and hands-on lutherie training for students at all levels.

Husband and wife Charles Fox and Denise Richards are business and creative partners both ASL and Charles Fox Guitars.

Pioneer American luthier Charles Fox has been active in the development of modern lutherie for over 40 years. Charles is often referred to as the dean of educators in the field of guitar making, having introduced hundreds of people to this craft and counting many of today's successful luthiers among his former students.  Since 1968, Charles has been building guitars both as an independent luthier and as head of guitar production workshops.  In 1973 he founded the first school for guitar makers in North America, the School of the Guitar Research & Design Center in South Strafford, VT.  In 1993 Charles established the American School of Lutherie in Healdsburg, CA, where he also co-founded the Healdsburg Guitar Festival.

Short & long term instruction - classical, steel string, electric, and archtop guitar construction.

Stringed instrument repair and restoration is the foundation of our business. The Guitar Hospital was founded in 1967 by Dan Erlewine who later went on as Research and Development consultant for Stewart-MacDonald and the repair columnist for Guitar Player Magazine. Bryan Galloup who apprenticed and worked with Dan in the early 80s took the business over and continued to teach repair and restoration.

Vermont Instruments is a teaching lutherie begun in 1983 offering private and small group tutorials by appointment. Students design and build their own instruments from raw materials. Acoustic and structural design, jig-making, inlay and repair are woven into a personalized course of study to accommodate each person's interest, skill level, and experience. Courses are designed to minimize the need for expensive equipment and specialized jiggery. It is expected that a student can continue their own creative work using small-scale power tools and common hand tools.

Ukulele Building Course - A two week course in Ukulele building. Students will choose materials and trim options, and learn how to build a soprano or tenor ukulele from scratch, not a kit.

Students work daily with Adam Buchwald, an experienced builder/repairman most recently from Brooklyn, NY. Adam will build an instrument along with everyone else during the course. We follow the hand-building tradition, not the factory model. We wish to further the craft by incorporating useful modern techniques with traditional wisdom.

Additional Luthier Web Resources

  • Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans -

During the summer of 1988, a small group of stringed instrument makers and repair technicians met with the intent of establishing a not-for-profit professional trade organization. Most simply, we preferred to be an "association," deciding to focus specifically on "stringed instruments," and we felt that the word "artisans" best described our mutual activities. Hence, the Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans (with the accidental yet recognizable acronym of "ASIA") was born. Michael Dresdner was chosen to launch the concept of ASIA, with the initial goal of facilitating through consensus a mission statement and set of bylaws that would provide a framework of integrity for our future evolution.

With Michael Dresdner's task complete, a Board of Directors was elected and Dick Boak, assuming the voluntary post of editor and executive director, began the task of developing a publication and operating procedure. The ASIA journal began as a very informal 4-page newsletter and grew over the course of several years into the substantial and respected magazine Guitarmaker.
