  • Railscasts

A must! Awesome screencasts about Ruby on Rails, best practices, tips, new gems, etc.

  • Asciicasts

If you’re not into watching videos, this site mimics Railscasts’ tutorials in text. It’s not as up-to-date as the first one, but it’s excelent.

  • Nettuts+

While we’re not 100% focused on Ruby and Rails, we’re posting more and more applicable content these days!

  • Riding Rails

The official Ruby on Rails blog. They don’t post many tips or tutorials, but they announce official releases, so it’s good to read it often.

  • Planet Ruby on Rails

A Ruby on Rails blog aggregator. It’s no as filtered as reading one of the blogs I listed above, but it’s a good resource to check every once in a while.

Ruby Version Manager (RVM)

Listing's Web Site Thumbnail Image

Links

Listing Info click here to show or hide more info

( from listing's site ) - RVM lets you deploy each project with its own completely self-contained and dedicated environment--from the specific version of ruby, all the way down to the precise set of required gems to run your application. Having a precise set of gems also avoids the issue of version conflicts between projects, which can cause difficult-to-trace errors and hours of hair loss. With RVM, NO OTHER GEMS than those required are installed. This makes working with multiple complex applications, where each has a long list of gem dependencies, much more efficient. RVM let you easily test gem upgrades, by switching to a new clean set of gems to test with, while leaving your original set intact. It is flexible enough to even let you maintain a set of gems per environment, or per development branch--or even per individual developer's taste!

Pakyow

( from listing's site ) - Pakyow Pakyow is an open-source framework for building web apps in Ruby. It enables you to get straight to work by letting data be data, views be views, and code be code. Simple.

In Pakyow, views are purely structural and contain no logic, keeping the view focused on it's job of presentation. No special markup is required in the view. This means the designer can build the presentation layer for an app in their own environment.

View construction happens automatically, which means a working, navigable front-end can be created without any back-end code. Business logic is added later without any changes to the front-end, eliminating resistance and keeping development moving forward.

  • Singular and Plural in Rails - ( link )

Rails uses both singular and plural.

    • database table is plural
    • model is singular
    • resource-based controllers should be plural (which means the directory for the views and the helper is also plural)
    • The route name and the urls it generates/recognizes are plural. The rake routes command (also a good reminder of what to call your controller actions) will tell you what routes are generated from this
